North American Power has agreed to pay $2.6 million into Connecticut’s fuel assistance program to settle a two-year investigation by the state's attorney general into the company’s marketing practices.

North American Power, which admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement, will make “charitable donations” to the nonprofit Operation Fuel in equal payments of $100,000 over 26 months. Operation Fuel provides emergency fuel assistance to residents in need.

The investigation was triggered by complaints by consumers that North American Power was offering a low introductory rate that was quickly replaced by a variable rate at substantially higher-than-market prices. The state's consumer counsel urged consumers to avoid energy suppliers with variable rates.
